Carbon Markets for Aviation and Aviation Fuels: Carbon Reduction, Pricing, Accounting and Reporting

NEW FOR 2024! Updates on the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Hydrogen 45V calculator

All course times are listed in Central European Time

The Carbon Markets for Aviation and Aviation Fuels: Strategies for Carbon Reduction, Pricing, Accounting and Reporting for industry stakeholders will focus on the accounting and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector, with a particular focus on aviation fuels and SAF. Course attendees will be expertly guided through the global requirements for SAF specifically, the lifecycle GHG emissions of aviation fuels, emission reduction strategies and corporate carbon accounting.

During the course, we will highlight the critical need for SAF feedstock sustainability, determine the carbon intensity of SAF, offer a better understanding of CO2 reduction strategies in the aviation sector and evaluate the importance of having clear accounting mechanisms to reduce emissions.

Key course features include:

  • Access six hours of training and course materials

  • Interact with each trainer directly through our dedicated Q&A sessions

  • Access presentation materials and recordings for future learning

  • Receive a course certificate of attendance

  • Exchange details and make long-lasting contacts with other masterclass delegates

Course outline and schedule

Module 1: Global SAF Requirements

  • Global context for emission reduction and key components of airline emission reduction strategies

  • Current performance of the airline industry, including committed goals (e.g. Net Zero by 2050)

  • Implications for airlines and risks/opportunities for airline industry stakeholders (e.g., lenders, investors, customers, insurers, suppliers, OEMs, leasing companies, etc)

  • Understanding CO2 reduction strategies in the aviation sector

  • Understanding what airlines are doing to improve carbon emissions performance

  • Determining how to translate high level internal corporate policy relating to carbon reduction into buying strategies

  • General overview of SAF production pathways

  • Leading Fuel Pathways: HEFA, FT fuels, eFuels, alcohol and sugar routes

  • Value chain of SAF

Module 2: Life Cycle GHG Emissions of Aviation Fuels

  • LCA models

  • GHG calculation requirements

  • Differences in GREET, CORSIA, LCFS, and RED calculations

  • Case studies for prominent fuel pathways

  • Uncertainties in GHG calculations and verification

Module 3: Emission Reduction Strategies

  • Offsets, SAF and other strategies to meet carbon targets

  • Understanding Greenhouse Gas (GHG) verification requirements

  • Providing examples of regulatory frameworks for offsetting emissions (e.g. EU ETS)

  • What do you include in a claim? What is the difference between the various reporting schemes?

Module 4: Corporate Carbon Accounting

  • Carbon accounting, data and KPIs, how to measure, track and report the right KPIs for your strategy to deliver carbon reduction goals

  • Establishing effective practices for carbon accounting and reporting, including the consideration of Scope 1 and 3 emissions

  • Evaluating the importance of having clear accounting mechanisms to reduce emissions

  • What impact does the reduction in Scope 1 emissions have in Scope 3 emissions for different stakeholders in the value chain?

  • Detailing the importance of Book and Claim as a registry to ensure reduction claims for SAF are forwarded legitimately, avoiding double claiming and ensuring transparency

  • Addressing misalignment of carbon accounting frameworks
